If you’re concerned about driving safely, then the single most important thing is vision. If you’re incapable of seeing a threat, then there’s no way you can respond to it, and that puts you and your loved ones at risk. In this review you find out about best windshield water repellent products to increase your driving safety.
It sounds so obvious, but so many of use don’t do anything to protect our windshields, trusting in the manufacturers specs to keep us safe. And even if the design choices made for our car are adequate to keep use safe for the first couple of years of the life of a car, after a while water repellent coatings break down, micro abrasions cause water to hold onto the glass and further reduce visibility, and slowly but surely it becomes more difficult to see out of our vehicles.
It might not even be noticeable to you, until you get caught in a sudden storm, and by then it’s already too late. With water hammering into your screen and visibility a matter of feet, do you really want to take that risk?
That’s why it’s vitally important to keep your windshield treated with a water repellent spray. It only takes a few minutes to apply, and each application lasts months, so can you really justify not doing it? On top of this, a lot of water repellent sprays also work to protect your screen against stone chips, scratches and other damage, so it’s a double advantage.
We’ve reviewed four products, detailing why you’d want them and the advantages of each one.
Aquapel Glass Treatment By PGW
Wasting time and money is never ideal when it comes to protecting your windshield and repelling rain, which is why Aquapel Glass Treatment By PGW is a great rain repellent option to go with. Rain can be really dangerous when it comes to driving. It reduces visibility and can cause some serious accidents, especially when your windshield wipers aren’t working quite right. This particular windshield treatment is so effective at repelling rain that water just beads up and rolls right off, almost like your car has a second set of windshield wipers. It’s a great solution for increasing visibility and decreasing the risk of driving in poor visibility conditions.
Aquapel Glass Treatment By PGW is extremely easy to apply to any windshield and should take no longer than 10 or 15 minutes to complete the application process. All you need to do is make sure that windshield is both clean and dry, squeeze the tabs towards each other with the felt side down, and apply to the windshield. Afterwards, simply use some paper towel to buff it into the windshield until the solution is no longer visible.
Aquapel Glass Treatment By PGW comes with 6 individual use applicators, each of which is more than enough for a full windshield. So, you can actually cover all of the windows on 2 separate cars a single purchase. It’s a good option to go with if you are worried about harming the paint or rubber around the windshield and other windows. It’s perfectly safe to use, so much so that you don’t even need to wear any gloves.
- Very easy to apply
- Enough for 2 cars
- Will not harm paint or rubber
- Great for increasing visibility in the rain
- Causes rain to bead up
- Air contaminants can turn the layer hazy
- Needs to be applied in cool shade

TriNova Windshield Rain Repellent is also a nice choice to consider seeing as it not only works for rain, but for snow and ice as well. Rain-X 5071268 2-in-1 Glass Cleaner and Rain Repellent
A crowd favorite, this 2 in 1 set of glass cleaner and rain repellent is a really big hit with virtually everybody who tries it. The fact that you get both a great automotive glass cleaner and a first rate rain repellent for your windshield for a fairly low price is something that everybody can appreciate. It costs literally a fraction of getting a professional cleaning and rain treatment done.
When it comes to the glass cleaner, there is really nothing that works better. Using normal glass cleaners can leave swirls or streaks on windshields. However, Rain-X automotive glass cleaner is specially formulated to get everything off of windshields including those annoying streaks.
In terms of the Rain-X rain repellant solution, applying it is about as easy as it gets. All you have to do is spray it on and then wipe it off with some paper towel. Nano Safeguard Auto Glass and Windshield Treatment
One of the best product we’ve found for keeping your windshield water repellent and visibility high. This treatment starts working at low speeds, causing water droplets to bead up and slide from your windscreen without you having to touch the wipers.
It’s also a dirt repellent, so dirt, dust and other debris has far less of a hold on your glass. That means filthy water and mud kicked up by vehicles in front just slides clean from your windshield without clinging or leaving filthy streaks halfway across your vision range.
It’s simple to apply, with an idiot proof wipe method fully detailed in the kit, and comes with a formulated cleaner to use before you apply the treatment itself, to make sure that you get the best bond possible.
It’s good value too. One kit will treat around 50 square feet, which is way more than one car. And that’s important, because in this day and age, which family has just one car? You’re going to want to treat your partners car as well as your own, and with this kit, you can easily do that.
Overall, if you’re looking for one of the best windshield water repellent, that lasts a long time and gives the best performance, this is it.
- Complete kit with sealant + cleaner
- Works very well at repelling water
- Kit covers approximately 50 Sq. Ft.
- Last longer than most competitors
- Often out of stock
A solid water repellent, MaxMolix also works to reduce night time glare and light bloom that causes night blindness, increasing your visibility when faced with oncoming traffic and making it much easier to see and make decisions
Easy to apply, and ready to drive in just a handful of hours, the effect lasts up to six months per application and protects against anything you might face whilst you’re out on the road.
As expected, it’s a water repellent, with the beading effect starting around 60mph, which is important, because it’s when you’re going fast that you need maximum visibility.
This treatment also works on dirt, animal and insect filth, as well as snow and frost. Because it’s a protective coating, anything that’s on your windscreen will just wipe off with less residue than before.
If you’re looking for the best windshield water repellent that also works to protect you from glare and night blindness, this is the product we recommend.
- Easy to apply
- Works very well at repelling water
- Frost repellent
- Starts working efficiently only above 60 mph
Rainfree Auto Glass Cleaner and Rain Repellent
Another solid rain repellent, Rainfree is a good product that works incredibly well, but it’s a little more expensive for what you’re getting than our top two choices. However, this is probably the best choice when it comes to general visibility.
According to the manufacturers, laboratory testing indicates that glass treated with this has up to 40% improved visibility during the day, and up to 80% improved visibility at night! So if visibility is your main concern, this is an excellent product.
Made in Italy, home of the high powered sports car, this treatment is, like all of the others we’re looking at today, a nano based product that creates a powerful coating over the glass of your windshield.
Simple and easy to apply, you get a bottle of glass cleaner alongside the nano treatment, which is formulated to work alongside the treatment, giving you the best finish possible. Once treated, your screen is water repellent, and resistant to dirt, bugs, frost and snow.
Like we said, this is more expensive than our other choices, but if you do decide to pick it up, you’ll have an effective water repellent treatment that’s simple to apply and works exceptionally well.
- Innovative nanotechnology formula
- Easy application
- Improves visibility by 40%
- Water droplets are quite small
ProKlear Nano Bond Anti Glare Treatment
As well as being anti-rain and anti-glare, this kit also comes with an anti-fog spray that’s supposed to be used on the inside of your windows. I don’t suffer with this problem in my car, but I live in an area without much in the way of temperature variation.
If you suffer from this problem, then this might be the kit for you. Fogging on the inside of windscreens is a real problem, and it’s incredibly hard to deal with as you’re driving. If the air conditioning won’t deal with it (if you’ve got it) then you’re reduced to either wiping it off as you drive, which is incredibly dangerous and not something we recommend, as well as leaving water droplets on the inside of your screen that dry into obtrusive water marks. Or you can just cope with it and wait it out until the temperature equalises and condensation stops. Which is obviously not idea, because for the whole duration you won’t be able to see anything.
As a rain repellent, it does the job. It works from around 55mph, or 70kph, activating when you need it, and helps to repel other issues like dirt and snow.
Overall, we’d still choose one of the others, but if the anti fog sells you on this, go right ahead.
- Kit includes glass polish / precleaner, nano sealant with bundled free anti-fog spray
- Makes windshield anti-glare
- Creates an invisible molecular bond
- Starts working efficiently only above 70 mph
- Lasts less than most competitors
